The Prince and Princess of Wales have expressed their sadness at the death of young photographer Liz Hutton, saying it was “an honor to have met such a brave and humble young woman”.
The 17-year-old, who died Wednesday, was pursuing a photo bucket list after being diagnosed with an aggressive and rare form of cancer earlier in the year.
Liz, from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, was invited to snap photos of William at Windsor Castle in October after a photo of Kate hugging him hit the headlines.
William and Kate, who were treated for cancer this year, said in a personal message shared on their Kensington Palace social media accounts: “We are so sorry to hear that Liz Hutton has tragically passed away.
“It was an honor to meet such a brave and humble young lady.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Liz’s parents Vicky and Aaron and her brother Mateo at this unimaginably difficult time.”
The message was signed “W & C”.
Liz’s mother Vicky Robaina praised her “incredible daughter”, adding that “she was flying high until the end” when she announced her death at X.
He added that her death at home early Wednesday morning “left a Liz-shaped hole in our lives that I don’t know how we’re going to fill.”
She asked people to share one of Liz’s photos under the hashtag #LizHatton as a tribute and to support the family’s work to fund research into desmoplastic small round cell tumor, a rare and aggressive sarcoma.
Ms Robayna has set up a fundraising page at justgiving.com/crowdfunding/vicky-robayna with a target of raising £100,000.
As part of her bucket list, Liz has photographed comedian Michael McIntyre, circus performers, the Royal Ballet, models from the Storm Model Agency, London Air Ambulances from the helipad, hotel doors, and the red carpet at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Renowned British photographer joined Rankin to head the fashion shoot.
She fulfilled what her mother described as her “greatest wish” by spending two days with Los Angeles-based portrait photographer David Suh, who had flown in from the US to work with her.
The project culminated in his own photography exhibition in London this month, showcasing his work.
Ms Robayna told X at the time: “Liz had her own exhibition last week which is the perfect culmination of her incredible achievements.
“When I was looking at her pictures, I was more in awe of her than ever, thinking of the circumstances in which so many were taken.”
But Ms Robaina revealed how Liz was very tired two days ago and how they will celebrate Christmas as a family this weekend: “We know our time is short.”
Former Harrogate Grammar School student Liz launched her own website for her photography.
She began photography as soon as she could walk, saving up to buy her first “real” camera at age nine, and at age 11, she chose secondary school because photography was offered as a subject.
He started GCSE photography and A-levels to refine his skills.
Taking photographs helped Liz deal with her constant pain.
“Every time she picks up the camera and focuses on shooting something new and exciting, it helps distract her from the constant pain she feels every second of every day,” the site said.
“When taking pictures, the rest of the world doesn’t seem that big.”
