It’s not every day you come across a photographer who steals your breath away with his images. But that’s exactly what award-winning underwater photographer Benjamin Yavar does, because he’s not just any old underwater photographer, Ben is a freelance underwater photographer.
If that sounds unusual, it is. Ben’s spectacular images were taken in one breath, several meters below the water’s surface, which makes them even more remarkable. DIYP caught up with Ben shortly after winning first place at the 2024 ColorPro Awards.

DIY: Can you tell us about your background in freediving and photography and how you got started?
Ben: I started freediving as a personal challenge, but it quickly turned into a passion. The sea attracted me, opening a new world of freedom and connection with nature. Photography came naturally as I wanted to capture the incredible moments I experienced underwater. My journey has evolved to blend the two, allowing me to share these moments with others.

DIYP: Are there any particular advantages or challenges to photographing underwater as opposed to using scuba gear?
Ben: Freediving offers a unique sense of calm and freedom of movement that makes it easy to approach marine life undisturbed. However, it is physically demanding. Adjusting settings and holding your breath while creating shots within a given time frame adds complexity. Lighting is another challenge, as depth reduces available light, but the absence of bubbles creates clear scenes.

DIYP: Can you tell us about the camera gear you use regularly?
Ben: I use a Sony a7IV with a 12-24mm f4 lens attached to a Seafrogs underwater housing. I recently upgraded to a glass dome port, which significantly improved image sharpness, especially for backlit and split shots. My setup is lightweight, travel-friendly, and works great for the depth I work with.

DIY: How do you plan and execute an underwater shoot? Is it about spontaneous invention or meticulous preparation?
Ben: It is a balance of both. I plan for specific weather, tides and ocean activities, but underwater shoots often require adaptation. Marine life is unpredictable, so spontaneity is essential. I work closely with freedivers or subjects to ensure safety and coordination during filming.

DIY: Can you tell us about the most challenging or memorable photo you’ve taken underwater?
Ben: A memorable shot was catching a sardine with a freediver jay (like the one in my Instagram posts). Sardines move as an organism, creating dynamic, unpredictable patterns. Timing, positioning and breathlessness made it a challenge, but the reward of seeing that space of light, movement and human presence was unforgettable.

DIYP: Your work highlights the beauty of marine life and ocean landscapes. How do you hope your photography affects the viewer’s perception of the underwater world?
Ben: I hope to instill a sense of awe and a deeper appreciation for our oceans. By showing the beauty of the ocean, I want to inspire curiosity and empathy, encouraging visitors to respect and protect these fragile ecosystems. Every picture I take is a story of harmony between humans and the ocean.

DIYP: You’ve recently won or been a finalist in some major photography awards. How do you feel about receiving that recognition? What advice do you have for aspiring photographers?
Ben: Winning first place at the Colorpro Awards is an incredible honor. These achievements validate the hard work and passion I put into my craft. Reminds me of the power of storytelling through visuals. My advice to aspiring photographers is to stay true to your vision, be consistent and be open to feedback. Enter contests not just for recognition, but for the opportunity to grow, learn, and connect with a wider community of creators.

DIYP: What projects are you currently working on and what can we expect from you in the future?
Ben: I am particularly interested in using my photography to highlight environmental issues, creating a visual protest that raises awareness of the need to protect our oceans and marine life.
Looking ahead, I am keen to develop my skills in filmmaking. I want to expand beyond photography to create dynamic, immersive films that tell deep stories about the underwater world, marine conservation and human connection with nature. You can expect a mix of powerful images, travel and conservation narratives in both still and moving formats in my upcoming projects.
